To coincide with the release of the all-new Mustang on the Ford Fox platform, Revell Venice tooled up a new kit family to go along with the car.

For the all-new Fox-platform 1979 Mustang, the focus of this article will be the 1:24 version offered by Monogram and reissued several times throughout the years under the Monogram, Revell-Monogram, and Revell brands.

Following with the trend at the time of releasing annual model kits to depict year-to-year changes in the real vehicles hitting the showroom floors, MPC tooled up a kit based on the new-for-72 Dodge D/W series trucks.

For 1977, Monogram introduced a new kit family tooling for the popular ‘squarebody’ GM pickups.

This very popular pickup family has a long history in styrene, starting when the actual trucks first appeared in showrooms.

As part of its 1:24 pickup line, Monogram introduced the Dodge Ramcharger in 1980. This kit has seen a few reissues and variants over the years.

Let’s go back in time to 1977: GM’s new Rounded Line pickups have been on the market for almost five years and MPC has gotten wind that Monogram is going to be releasing a kit of this truck. Not to be outdone by the competition, the fine folks at MPC tool up a kit of this body style in their best-selling 1:25 scale. They even went as far as including extra parts to build different versions of the truck.

I confess that I had no love for the Revell squarebody kits. That being said, once I started researching this tooling due to many requests and confusions with the Monogram squarebody kits, I discovered that out of the three manufacturers the Revell version is the most diverse.

Getting the most out of their tooling dollars, Revell created a kit family of the new-for-1980 Ford F-series pickups and Bronco that was versatile enough for glue and snap-kit variants.

As part of its 1:24 pickup line, Monogram introduced a new F-150 and corresponding Bronco kit to go along with the new-for-1980 model line.

Starting with the new-for-1978 model year, MPC acquired the promotional contract for Chevrolet and produced glue kits based on the El Camino.

As part of a branding deal between Revell and HOT ROD Magazine, for 1987 Revell released a 1:25 scale kit of the first HOT ROD Magazine Hot Rod of the Year: Rick Dobbertin’s 1985 Pontiac J-2000 Pro/Street car.
